Katakana is used for writing words of origin other than Japanese (usually English...), in Japanese.
The other forms of Japanese writing are Kanji (ideograms: each simple character represents a word) and Hiragana (a syllabary alphabet thing like Katakana). Kanji is used for Chinese characters... Hiragana links those together and is for words of Japanese origin.
Here you get to learn Katakana... since it's the only one I have a font of.
If you learn Katakana with out knowing Japanese you'll at least be able to read a lot of things you see in anime... or food names that are of English (or whatever other languages you speak for that matter) origin 'n stuff like that. I guess.
Here's the font, the link is probably dead, sue me. :P
Save it somewhere then unzip it. Cut and paste the font into your font folder. (If you have Windows, that will be in the Control Panel).
Next to the symbols are the sounds/letters/syllables they make, and in blue(ish) are the keys you use to get them.
The one above this sentence is using diacritical marks, used to achieve more sounds not found in the other 2 grids (the basic symbols). I could be wrong on some of these... I'll have you know that I am self taught! Um... LoL. Trust me though, really... I'll have this page looked over by some people to check for errors, okay? And if you know of any incorrect information, do E-Mail me. Thank you!
Well, if you need any help with how to like get certain sounds or whatever just ask me, I'd be glad to help.
I feel like adding music again... mwahaha.
